Committee: United Nations Water Committee
Topic: Water Shortage Crisis and Equal Clean Water Access
Country: Jordan
Delegate: Devanshi Singhal
Position Paper
Equal access to water is a human right and necessity not only for a single individual but also for the well-being of any nation. There are countries like Canada and Scotland that have abundance of fresh water. However, there are countries like Yemen and Libya. Jordan is part of the latter category and in particular has always been challenged to meet clean and safe water demand due to reasons like population growth, economic development and geographical location. Most of Jordan’s major freshwater supply which has been from Jordan river and Yarmouk River is nearly. diminished
Jordan’s scarcity is so severe that it has become the second most water poor country and that it is said that ‘little as 61 m3 of water is available per person every year’. Its arid climate has always meant that there is less rainfall and severe drought but in recent years climate change has led the region to become even drier. Moreover, the population has steadily increased mainly due to waves of refugees entering the country. This increases the pressure to provide not only more drinking water but also water for agriculture.
Currently Jordan is working on the situation by evoking awareness and improving infrastructure. New water pricing is being introduced to promote reduced usage of water. Water recycling is being implemented so that the treated wastewater can be used for industrial and agricultural purposes. Adding on, desalination is being worked on along the red sea to create a new fresh water source.
Jordan advocates for financial and technological support from the UN to further expand its new infrastructure and sustainable practices. An example of such technology is cloud seeding. Which has made many countries self-sufficient but require a huge investment. Action needs to be taken so Jordan can join ranks in being a water sufficient country.
This part is a collection of my stories
Will it ever come true
Has a ghost ever written a letter to you? Well I don’t know about you but once I imagined what a ghost would write to me. Here is what had happened.
I was just taking a toy from my bedroom to play with my little brother. When I thought I heard a tap on my study table but when I turned around there was nobody. It occurred to me that what if a ghost did write to me. Here are a few possibilities of what the ghost would write to me if he could:
“ha! Can you guess who I am? You know me very well!”
Hmmm! I think this would really not be what a ghost would write; this is something a thing a person would say who is talking to you after a long time. Let’s see … uhm! Got it now a proper ghost which wants to tell you a secret would say:
“holla, I am your ancestor who can write, and I am known as the …ghost writer! Actually, I have been observing your family and I have concluded that you are the only one who I can trust from all of your relatives. Read carefully and this is not a joke before I died I told my kids to put all my fortune in the grandfather clock, so my children did, and they forgot all about it. So, when you go to your grandparent’s house go and take a peek inside the grandfather clock, please!”
This looks like a what an ancestor ghost would say.
sister hurry up! You have been up there for ages!!” shouted out my brother pulling me out of my thoughts
ARE YOU A BROTHER WHO WANT TO TAKE REVENAGE FROM YOUR SISTER?
If yes, then read this recipe.
RECIPE FOR MAKING SISTERS CROSS!
Firstly, insist that you want to help
your sister complete her homework.
When she is out of sight take her pen and
scribble over her homework.
When she comes back tell that you are sorry
and that this time you will help.
Mention that you really want to buy some
chocolate chip cookies from the nearest shop.
Repeat this about 20 times.
Remember to say this before she finishes her homework.
Once you reach the shop and look around for 2 minutes and then say, “the cookie I want are not available.”
TIP: don’t tell your sister the brand or name of the cookie you want so that even if it is there you can say “that the cookie you wanted is not available.”
Run to the building even when your sister keeps shouting “slow down, wait for me!”
In the lift tell her that you would prefer to buy a packet of chip instead of the packet of cookies now.
In the shop start fighting with another kid that is sure to make your sister frustrated.
Then take about half hour to choose which flavor of chips you want.
While your sister pays the money run off to the park.
Take 20 minutes to get convinced to go back home otherwise your sister will not be able to finish her homework.
Finally return home.
At home tell her you want to play with her.
Keep saying that till she says only 1 more
minute and I will be done with my homework.
Start counting to 60.
Start playing with her.
Then say that now you are exhausted with
your busy day and really need to take some rest.
Moving downwards
I have had an unforgettable experience in a matter of minutes. The moment I took birth I was pulled upwards into the sky by an invisible force. I had to leave my family. I was pulled towards a happy, white cloud. I found myself with uncountable other droplets who looked lost. The little cloud kept absorbing little droplets like me until it had so many little water droplets that it looked like it would burst under the weight of all of us. Just as I got accustomed. I felt myself going downwards, I was a raindrop that was falling as the first rain.
As I flew downward, lots of little sand particles joined my journey. I cautiously peeped down towards the dry parched earth. I knew the earth was thirsty and only I along with my family of droplets could quench her thirst to make the dry colourless earth green and pleasant once again. Then I caught sight of my home, the river and suddenly I felt sad that I had to leave my family. For a moment I just wanted to go back but then I thought about the dry earth and its cry for help so I decided to be brave and strong and maybe one day I might find a way back home.
A few moments later, I bumped onto the ground. I was expecting little children to step on me and send me flying into the sky once more, but instead I was quickly gobbled up by the dry earth. I seeped down until I was with a family of little seeds thirstily looking at me. I ran as fast as I could until I lost sight of them. I didn’t want to die so soon. I was scared and frightened that I have been bundled up in this dark depth of the earth for years, but I am sure one day it will be the end of me, and that end might not be too far.
ALADDIN IN 2020
BY-DEVANSHI SINGHAL
Have you ever thought how different the famous tale of Aladdin would be if it was written by someone living in this modern world full of technology? Well here is a possibility.
Once there was a boy named Aladdin. He lived with his mother Salma in a slum named Mitapole.Slmaa worked as a cleaner at a grocery store so she didn’t earn much. Therefore, they had a hand to mouth existence.
One day a man dressed in black knocked on Aladdin’s house’s front door.
As Aladdin opened the door the man on the door questioned “Aladdin it is nice to see you. Do you remember me? I am your uncle and I have some good news for you. I know a place where you can earn a lot of money!”
Now this man who was dressed in black was not really Aladdin’s uncle but was his fathers’ friend which he had never knew about and this man was the greediest man in the whole world. Recently he had a huge misfortune and then one of his friends told him about a cave which had a box of never-ending money but had a curse that only children could go in and out. So, he decided that Aladdin would be perfect.
“oh! thank you uncle you are so kind. Just let me text my mother to let her know where I am going! “explained Aladdin.
Aladdin packed some leftover bread and some water from the lake. Then both of them jumped into the FJ cruiser which was parked outside and zoomed off.
Once they got down after their long journey the uncle exclaimed “Aladdin now all you have to do to get a lot of money as per my promise. You have to get me the never-ending money box from that cave.”
Aladdin rubbed his hands gleefully and then suddenly stopped because he had seen something that would stop his success “uncle you forgot to tell me the password!” Aladdin impatiently questioned
Now the cave didn’t belong to the uncle, so he didn’t know the password, so he said, “my dear that is the fun you need to find the password yourself!”
Aladdin was good at cracking down codes, so this was easy for him. Once he cracked the code he took the torch from his uncle and went inside.
As soon as he entered he was welcomed by an electronic screen
A recorded message said, “good day welcome to the amazing treasures of the world.”
A page opened which had a picture and description of treasures like a time machine, a tablet with unlimited storage space, a foldable car, a foldable house, a never-ending money box, never ending food box.
As Aladdin finished reading the descriptions he remembered that his uncle had died long ago. He was mad at how he had been taken advantage of
Aladdin clicked on one of the objects and it came out as if it was coming out from a vending machine. He had decided that he use the time machine to get back home.
Are you stuck at home and are really upset? Don’t like the online class? Can’t meet up with your friends? Well here is a story which might change your perspective about being at home 24/7.
“mom I hate being at home,” this is the same line I repeated in front of my mother ever since we have been stuck in this home because of covid-19 but this changed when I began to see the good side of being at home.
There were many advantages like you don’t have to wake up so early like usually I woke up at five am but as school starts at seven thirty I get to wake up at six thirty. That’s one advantage
Another advantage was is during online class time I don’t need teachers permission to move around and I don’t have to sit on o hard chair all the time if I can sit wherever I am comfortable
Another advantage I find is that I spend more quality time with my family . I play games with them and watch movies which we normally don’t do.
As you can see I have found many advantages of staying at home so learn to accept the change and pray everything will be normal again
The first summer at home
summer vacation is always fun
but when you are at home it is like a plain bun
no going out to other countries or even the mall
you can’t go to the pool and play with the ball
but if you try you can make a boring summer fun!
you could make a painting of the window view
or you can take up an online course to teach you something new
and before you know it time will run
you will feel the 2 months of holiday was just 2 seconds of fun!
